UA ENGAGE Spring 2023 Keynote by Dean Cynthia Nance

Dean Cynthia Nance gave the 2023 keynote address, titled "Quiet Leadership." Dean Nance earned her bachelor's degree in economics from Chicago State University. She holds a Juris Doctor with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law. In addition, she received a master's degree in finance from the University of Iowa College of Business. Her teaching and scholarship focus on labor and employment law, workplace legislation and poverty law. She was the law school's first director of pro bono and community engagement.

Dean Nance is widely involved within both her community and her profession, and has received various awards for her outstanding service, including the 2023 W. Harold Flowers Law Society Carrying on the Legacy Award and 2023 Association of American Law Schools Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award.

UA ENGAGE Launch with Dr. Joycelyn Elders

Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders gave the keynote address at the launch of the NSF ADVANCE UA ENGAGE project. In her keynote, Elders recounted her life's story, from her childhood in rural Arkansas, to her studies at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, to her tenure as head of the Arkansas Department of Health, to her service as the first Black and second woman ever to serve as U.S. Surgeon General. Elders spoke of the importance of the mentors and role models who supported her throughout her life and career.
