The University of Arkansas is committed to supporting and encouraging women in STEM.

UA ENGAGE (Empowering Networked Groups for Arkansas Gender Equity) is funded by a $1 million NSF ADVANCE grant from the National Science Foundation to better recruit and retain women and women of color faculty within STEM departments.

The overarching goal of UA ENGAGE is institutional transformation. By adopting policies and practices to support underrepresented groups and mitigate organizational barriers, UA ENGAGE will make a positive difference to our faculty and university. The initiative will target gender and racial equity among faculty by focusing on valuing and integrating women faculty, while also enhancing efforts to recruit diverse faculty.

The three major aims of the grant are to:

  1. Empower women faculty through redistribution of workloads
  2. Connect women faculty to peers and mentors within research and scholarly communities
  3. Attract and integrate more and more diverse women faculty

Congratulations to Our Faculty!

Many faculty received awards at the Provost's Faculty Recognition Reception on April 10. Faculty were recognized for excellence in mentoring and teaching.

Congratulations! U of A professors Natalie Clay and Michelle Evans-White (who is a UA ENGAGE Leadership Program Graduate!) will explore how salt impacts the movement of resources like carbon in riparian zones, thanks to a $948,291 grant from the National Science Foundation. Natalie Clay, an associate professor of entomology and plant pathology with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, has joined forces with Michelle Evans-White, U of A Biological Sciences Department chair and professor, and Sally Entrekin, professor of aquatic entomology at Virginia Tech, on a three-year fact-finding mission to study salt's impact on processes and organisms in riparian zones. The experiment station is the research arm of the U of A System Division of Agriculture. Technology Ventures' Inventor Spotlight: Susanne Striegler, professor of chemistry & biochemistry (and UA ENGAGE Leadership Exploration program graduate!). Whether it's due to nature or nurture, Striegler's research interests now include catalysis, micro- and nanogels and carbohydrate transforming enzymes. Her work, as described on her faculty profile, states: "We use synthesis, catalysis, biochemistry and molecular recognition in combination with material science and computation in an interdisciplinary approach to design new potent glycosidase inhibitors, evaluate glycosidase structures, mechanisms and function, and provide new chemical tools for the study of biological events." Striegler has two patents issued and a new patent application in process as of July 2024, all of which were filed through the U of A's Technology Ventures Office (she also has an additional patent pending related to her work in antimicrobial nanogels). With continued funding, Striegler's goal is to have a breakthrough process for breaking down biomass into simple sugars within the next three years. https://news.uark.edu/articles/71320/technology-ventures-inventor-spotlight-susanne-striegler?utm_source=arkansas-news&utm_medium=email_2024-09-25&utm_campaign=news_headlines&utm_content=technology-ventures-inventor-spotlight-susanne-striegler
